Family Law – Fixed Fee Option

How much will this cost?

For the longest time this has been a question that has been the source of much worry for people who need legal help. It has also been one that lawyers have been historically reluctant to answer clearly, often falling to the “how long is a piece of string” expression of uncertainty. This is particularly the case if you are looking at an hourly rate model of fees.

A few years ago we were an early adopter of Fixed Fee Arrangements, and have found that to be far simpler for our clients to work with and budget for. It also removes the fear of whether asking another question might cost you more. It won’t. We want our clients to feel comfortable and confident with us by the side, and so we encourage you to contact us as often as you need.

We’re happy to jump on the phone with you if you’re not sure about your next steps. We’d prefer to have a chat with you to see if there are any quick questions we can help with on the spot, and also give you a chance to hear our approach and help you work out if we might be the right team for you.

If you feel like we might be the right people to help you, we’re happy to have a short chat on the phone to find out what’s happening and whether it’s time for legal advice. After that initial phone chat, if you’re interested in more advice, instead of a short free consultation (where we wouldn’t be able to really do too much to help), we would prefer to really get into it with you. Let’s face the details together and work out where you’re headed.

Our initial consultations usually last between 60 to 90 minutes, with our priority being on completing our discussions together. We don’t have a “time’s up” approach. Our fees are $395, GST Inc, for that consultation. We provide you with a written summary afterwards of the overview of your matter and a guide of the next steps we see ahead for you. You will also receive a copy of the book, Who gets the Dog?, a family law guide written by our Principal Lawyer, Kathryn Hodges.

If you decide to retain us to look after your family law matter, whether that is locking in an agreement and making it legally binding, or by acting for you in a matter where you don’t have an agreement yet, we will tailor a fixed fee arrangement for your matter.

Our usual arrangement is to offer our services in 3 month blocks, because in family law, it just takes time to get real progress happening. This isn’t a “one letter” and it’s sorted area of the law.

Our aim is to keep things as simple and clear as they can be for you, and to focus on seeing your family law issues resolved and behind you, so that you can move on with peace of mind.
